Kitchen Furniture and Designs That Match

Choosing kitchen furniture is the same as choosing accessories that go with your outfit. Everything should match, because standouts bring unwanted attention and will really stick out like an annoying sore thumb.

In order to avoid eyesores in your kitchen, you will have to figure out what type of kitchen design you have—contemporary, country, Old World, rustic, or traditional? When you know your kitchen design, choosing the right furniture will be an easier task.

·        Contemporary

Contemporary kitchens are futuristic and minimalist, with furniture and motifs that are mostly black, white, and silver. However, other light or dark colored wood will also suffice.

Suitable furniture for contemporary kitchens are those made of steel, or plastic—cool and non-porous materials that emphasize the sleek and smooth-surfaced theme.

Furniture with straight and angular edges, with none or minimal embellishments are perfect for contemporary kitchens.

·        Country

Country kitchens are homely and welcoming, with hints of simple living all around.

Most country kitchen furniture are made of light or medium colored wood, glazed or unglazed, with smooth curves and polished surfaces. Designs like flowers and birds carved into the backs of chairs or along the edges of the table add to the effect.

Other furniture, accents, and accessories that bear floral or other organic patterns also go well with the country kitchen design.

·        Old World

Old World kitchens are old-fashioned, designed to replicate the look of 17th century Europe. The walls and floors are typically cement or bricks, or dark wood.

To blend with the dark and dramatic look of Old Age kitchens, the choice of furniture are preferably ones with copper, brass, silver, or pewter accents on medium or dark colored wood.

Old World kitchen furniture have sharp angles to signify the arches, points, and buttresses of old times. Although this kind of furniture is elegant and stylish, it is not ideal for a household with children., who might injure themselves on the more eccentric Old World styles.

·        Rustic

Rustic kitchens, a cross between country and contemporary kitchen designs, are rich in bright colors such as red, orange, and yellow.

Majority of the furniture, the ceiling, the walls, and down to the floor for rustic kitchens are made of wood. The kind of wood typically used ranges from light to dark stained wood, with a glazed finish for a contemporary feel.

The furniture designs have intricate detail and solid angles, but still maintain the simplicity and traditional forms of furniture. Accents on the wood furniture are brass or copper, to go with the warm colors of the design.

·        Traditional

Traditional kitchens are a mixture of all the kitchen designs. The fancy wood furnishings of country designs with the accents of Old World, teamed with the straight-edged contemporary and the warm colors of rustic make up the traditional kitchen.

Choosing furniture for a traditional kitchen shouldn’t be too hard. You can pretty much choose anything you want, based on the theme you have going on. Color choices range from neutral to pastel to the ones in the rustic palette. Granite, marble, or metal accents on the furniture are best.

Since most traditional kitchens have brick or tiled floors and walls, choose furniture that are easy on those materials. Avoid furniture with sharp or spindly legs and edges that easily scratch surfaces.

Buy kitchen furniture that you will actually use. Unnecessary stools, chairs, cabinets, etc. will only take up space, mean wasted money, and collect dust. Less is more, so don’t over-accessorize your kitchen.
